Among The Leaves-Cottontail

The baby cottontail has left his nest. He was born about a month ago, blind, pink and thumb-size. His mother had made a nest of rootlets, grasses and down from her own chest. By using four to seven materials, when the mother leaves the nest, the baby is perfectly protected and camouflaged. - Robert Bateman

Explore a lustrous Antarctic landscape that sparkles with the iridescence of opals.
"There have been many magic evenings in my life, but the evening of the iceberg cruise stands out .... The hues of the sky vied with the shadows of the icebergs for a sort of beauty contest of natures... It was at once glorious and subtle and everchanging as we glided among the gigantic towers of ice, and my mind kept turning to fantastic castles from some childhood fairy tale..."

An original lithograph is not a reproduction, each is an original and unique work of art. The artist makes separate drawings, one for each color to be printed, directlly on the working surface (commonly stone or Mylar film) to create individual plates. An original lithograph must pass through the press one time for each color it contains. Hand coloring may also be added later.

In the glorious light of Davis Strait, between Greenland and Canadas Baffin Island, the colors shift and bounce. This polar bear, successful in the hunt, has pulled his kill onto the ice floe. The raucous gulls hover in anticipation of scraps. In spite of the bear's great size, he seems only a tiny part of the awesome arctic landscape. - Robert Bateman

Alaskan Autumn

 |
|
In the North American context, Alaska is the greatest place for big, wild mammals. Denali Park puts on a spectacular show , caribou, Dall sheep, wolves, and of course, grizzly bears. In the autumn, the animals are at the peak of condition. Antlers are fully grown and ready for rutting. Winter coats are thick and shiny. This alone would make this destination worth an autumn visit, but the glory of fall colors creates landscape vista that dazzle the eye even without the view of wildlife. When I saw this grizzly mother and cub coming down a distant slope, I kept my fingers crossed that they would come closer and head up a particularly gorgeous slope. To my amazement they did."

Dispute Over Prey

The scene Ive recreated here is very common; the lioness makes the kill, and the male moves in to commence the feast. A lioness is used to putting a male in his place in disputes over protecting cubs or a fresh kill. Its mostly bluff and bluster, but in the case of feeding, she usually lets him get his way. - Robert Bateman

Arctic Landscape-Polar Bear

There is a sense of vastness in the land and sky of the arctic. The clean and barren rock stretches north to the shores of Hudson Bay. In the background of this painting, a polar bear prowls the territory. In fact, he has been moving through this landscape, head down, sniffing for lemmings or perhaps for bird's nests - a summer delicacy. He has become aware of your presence and has raised his head to investigate. - Robert Bateman

"I remember one winter's day when I was a boy, watching with astonishment a man in a park, holding out his hand with one sunflower seed at a thime, and chickadees coming to pluck them from his fingers. When I returned home I tried it on our back porch with a bit of fruit cake. I saw a chickadee in a nearby bush. I made a squeaking sound and instantly I was delighted to feel the delicate cool feet on my fingers and the little beak snatching my offering." - Robert Bateman

ROBERT BATEMAN "DAYLILIES AND DRAGONFLIES" The graceful curves of the daylilies interlaced with wild grasses and set against the still waters of the pond reminded me of a Japanese screen. The dragonflies were using the daylilies as vantage points to watch for insect prey. They always seemed to me like noble warriors of the air

Fluid Power - Orca

 |
|

When I think of the orca, I think of power. The whale is on the most powerful creatures of the sea. I decided to give this original print a big, bold, ominous feeling. If you were diving or in a small boat and you saw this orca rushing at you, you might wonder if you were going to be the first human in recorded history to be attacked. I wanted to show the big, black, bulbous, prow-like head of the orca and the towering fin, which can be taller than a man on the big, dominant bull orcas. I wanted to show the swirl of the water because hes moving quite quickly, and hes moving right toward you. - Robert Bateman
