Nature dominates the canvases of John Seerey-Lester. Because he prefers to paint only those subjects which he has seen firsthand, he travels the world extensively to study wildlife in its natural habitat. It is this essential research that gives Seerey-Lester's work the atmosphere and authenticity that set his paintings apart and make them so eloquently vital. Arctic Procession - Willow Ptarmigan With Caribou
In the softly falling snow, a herd of caribou become a moving backdrop for willow ptarmigan, camouflaged in the foreground, like spectators of the seemingly unending procession. " Adding a countermovement to the composition is the direct exchange to gazes between the caribou and with willow ptarmigan in the foreground. The back-and-forth of the glances here enlivens the painting and, at the same time, links the two distinct species, which share this wintry habitat." Giclée Canvas 150 signed and numbered, 12 Artist's Proofs 34 x 54" $3,305.00 Canadian Final Moments - Night Vision
Experience the heart-stopping thrill of an unexpected wilderness encounter with Final Moments - Night Vision. This first release in John Seerey-Lester's dynamic Final Moments series represents a new direction in the tradition of his enigmatic 1992 Black Magic - Panther. No longer on your own turf, Final Moments allow you to be more than a viewer. Each canvas invites individual interpretation. Is this the final fleeting moment before the subject vanishes as suddenly as it appeared? Or is this the final moment of a hunt? And if so, who is the hunter and who is the hunted? Each Final Moments edition is limited to only 180 canvases. Call your Mill Pond Press dealer to reserve yours today - the only thing you need truly fear is missing out on these exceptionally innovative limited editions. '"One of the most powerful of the big cats, the jaguar stalks its prey in the rainforests of South and Central America. Although it can climb trees and is a strong swimmer, it mainly hunts its prey at ground level or at the water's edge. An extremely difficult cat to see in the wild, the black or melanistic phase is even more obscure as it hunts in the dark depths of the forest. In my painting, it is the 'final moment' as the big cat bounds out of the darkness to take down its prey. Hopefully it is not you, the viewer." - John Seerey-Lester Giclee Canvas 180 s/n 48" x 30" $1,395.00 Canadian Loonlight
Loonlight, a signed and numbered limited edition is enhanced in the margin by a handsome reproduction of an original pencil drawing. "I've seen and experienced the painting before it's ever on canvas... My paintings are records of my face-to-face encounters with nature. They are about perception and understanding." - John Seerey-Lester This painting is based on a simple design concept I've had in mind since my interest in the abstract many years ago, before I began painting wildlife. I envisaged a solid black square with a single white line crossing horizontally a third of the way from the top. This line was counterbalanced by a solid white ball positioned in the left hand lower third of the square. Over the years, possibly because of my graphic art training, design concepts such as this have become more important to me that the selection of the species in creating my wildlife paintings. In this case, once I'd decided to choose water as the setting, it was important to select a subject that would not distract from the original black and white concept. The obvious choise was loons, coupled with a moonlit setting (the moon's reflection becoming the white ball). I hope Loonlight achieves the desired effect. - Seerey-Lester This painting is a reworked field sketch in oil on canvas. When I'm working in the field, I often paint on unstretched pieces of canvas attached to a clipboard. If I feel the quick sketch has potential, I'll work on it some more, until it's a completed study, and then have the canvas stretched. In this instance the field sketch was painted from an open top safari vehicle during a game drive in the Serengeti reserve in Tanzania, East Africa. A small pride of lions was lying hidden in the long savannah grass. The fast-setting afternoon sun was casting a warm glown on the small group. As we watched, they lazily went about their siesta. A young cub, craving attention from its mother, walked over and laid next to the adult lioness, snuggling its head against its mother's chest. As it did so, one ear folded back. Over the centuries, generations of tigers have re-enacted this scene - predator in pursuit of prey. It's a tableau as timeless as the temple ruins themselves. "In Ranthambore, India, there are many magical places such as Padam Talao, but my favorite is Rajbagh. The shallow waters of this lake have an atmosphere all their own. I have seen many tigers here, hunting chital (Indian deer). The ancient ruins, many shrouded in foliage, line the banks as a nostalgic backdrop. These relics of the past provide sanctuary for the tiger and a perfect place from which to scout for prey before making the attack. In my painting, I am showing the power of the tiger as it lunges from the cover of the bank to chase some unsuspecting prey in the low light of an Indian evening." - John Seerey-Lester Giclée Canvas 180 s/n plus 18 Artist's Proofs 22" x 37" $1,345 Canadian Sneak Peek
